Red Watch Bands save lives

In June 2008, a Stony Brook University faculty member lost her son to acute alcohol overdose while he was away in his freshman year of college. Shortly thereafter, SBU specialists and student leaders, with the enthusiastic support of then-President Shirley Strum Kenny, developed the Red Watch Band education awareness campaign to help prevent drinking deaths on college campuses.

During a four-hour training session offered to all students, participants learn how to recognize alcohol emergencies and respond effectively, according to the program website. All students who complete the comprehensive bystander intervention program receive CPR certification and learn to understand that alcohol emergencies require immediate, professional care.

In November, a group of 10 area high school students from SBU Medical Center's Health Occupations Partnership for Excellence program completed the Red Watch Band training and received red watches as a symbol of their willingness to help
