Waukee neighbors

Waukee residents will celebrate National Night Out on Aug. 3 with citywide neighborhood gatherings from 6:30 to 9 p.m.

Waukee police Lt. Troy Mapes said that when he joined the Waukee Police Department in 1999 it was a top priority for him to organize a local National Night Out event.

“I wanted us to be really proactive in crime prevention in our community,” he said. National Night Out started 27 years ago as a crime- and drug-prevention event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch. Last year, 36 million people participated in National Night Out. Waukee had 27 block parties last year, and an estimated 30 neighborhoods could hold such an event on National Night Out this year.

“It definitely has grown for us,” Mapes said.

Ryan McKinney of Southeast Willowbrook said this is the second year he’s helped with his neighborhood’s block party.

“We moved into this newer neighborhood and got to know everybody, but as more new people moved in we decided it would be a good idea for everyone to get to know each other and do a neighborhood watch,” McKinney said. “We usually do a potluck and everyone brings something to share, then one of us wheels a grill down and we grill hamburgers, hot dogs and brats.

“It’s a good time and everyone gets to know each other while the kids play together.
