China watchmakers are trying to utilize locally produced movements and modules in more releases but are facing resistance from buyers.
Cost is the main motivation for adopting domestic components, which are less expensive than imported counterparts at $0.10 to $5. Japan-made varieties are from $0.50 to $10, while Swiss types start at $50. For timepiece suppliers that can also build their own mechanisms, outlay is reduced further by 30 percent when incorporating in-house designs.
Quality concerns, however, are preventing companies from employing local models. Many clients feel that China-made movements and modules are not as accurate and reliable as versions from Japan and Switzerland. For example, the majority of QA movements from China have plastic parts, which break down more quickly than metal pieces found typically in foreign equivalents.
